Anyone who thinks the Steelers should use their franchise tag on Mike Wallace, obviously doesn't know what the hell they're talking about. It'd be more expensive to use that, then to actually match Wallace's other buyers.
All we have to do is match the other teams, and we'll get Wallace back. He's a restricted free agent, using a franchise tag on a restricted free agent is a VERY stupid decision, when all you have to do is match the other team. You'd have to pay Wallace WAY more money then you would if you didn't franchise tag him. If we don't match it, then we get compensation. Depending on how good the deal is, we could end up getting a 1st round pick, or two 1st round picks, or a 1st round pick and a deciding player, I mean that's what restricted free agent means.
Besides, Wallace is just testing the free agency waters anyways, I think he just wants to see how much he's worth. We'll probably match the deal, and we'll get him back. The thing I don't like about it is, if he was an unrestricted free agent, would he choose to leave? Then I have a problem with the guy. We'll more then likely match whatever deal another team gives him, and we'll get Wallace back.
It's pretty sad though, when these so called "experts" are saying that the Steelers could use their franchise tag, on a restricted free agent belonging to a team buried in cap debt.
