The book wasn't a step by step instruction manual but rather a helpful guide as to how to deal with the emotional aspects of the addiction (and yes, being addicted to drugs has a massive effect on your emotions). I think the book gave me more than the program did, but the program helped me to see the people I did not want to become; those who dropped their addictions to drugs for the addiction of repetition with the weekly meeting. There were people who literally would go through withdrawals from missing a meeting the way others would go through withdrawals from not shooting up. Substitution was not the answer to help me repair the parts of me that were defective.
