I think shows like The Office, Extras, Ali G, Fawlty Towers, some others, did pretty well in USA. Some people will like it, some people won't. I didn't really like Friends, or Gavin and Stacy, (just two examples from both nations). Some British comedians did very well there aswell. Billy Connoly, Ricky Gervais: some of the biggest comedians on the planet. Eddie Izzard, Russel Brand, etc, also did very well over there. The Monty Python lads were pretty popular, the play/musical 'Spamalot', was a Broadway sensation!
I understand some people won't 'get' many different things, everywhere across the world, but, I think it's more you just like it or you don't.
