San Jose Field Office
Take a minute and Google “Ezekiel Jackson.” You’ll see a professional wrestler, a fearsome hulk of a man, 305 sculpted pounds of aggression and might, a star in the World Wrestling Entertainment circuit. But the employees at the San Jose Field Office hosted a very different person at their Feb. 23 naturalization ceremony. Jackson —real name, Rycklon Stephens—wore a light blue shirt and cargo pants to cover his impressive bulk. Soft-voiced with just a touch of a Guyanese accent, Stephens frequently broke into smiles while chatting with San Jose Field Office employees.
Stephens spoke of immigrating as a child to New York on his father’s petition in 1989, and of attending college. He married a San Francisco Bay-area woman, and they moved to the South Bay in 2008.
“I got my degree, but I always wanted to wrestle,” he said. “I’m doing what I love to do.”
About naturalizing more than 20 years after immigrating, he explained, “I took my time. But it was the right time to do it now.”
As a guest of honor, Stephens sat onstage and led the group of approximately 450 new citizens in the Pledge of Allegiance. After being introduced to the sound of cheers from sports fans, he explained, “It’s been a long time coming!” Asked what he planned to do as a new U.S. citizen, Stephens replied, “I’m going to go work out.”
