So who's excited for Summerslam?! There are some interesting matches announced so far as this will be the first ppv of the 'new era' under the brand extension. Here's the card so far (I'll keep updating it as matches are announced, as always).
Brock Lesnar (with Paul Heyman) vs Randy Orton
Singles match for the Universal Championship
Seth Rollins vs Finn Balor
Singles match for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship
Dean Ambrose (C) vs Dolph Ziggler
Singles match for the WWE Womens Championship
Sasha Banks (C) vs Charlotte
(Dana Brooke is banned from ringside)
Singles match for the WWE Intercontinental Championship
The Miz (C) (with Maryse) vs Apollo Crews
John Cena vs AJ Styles
Tag Team match for the WWE Tag Team Championships
The New Day (Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods (C) vs Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson
Tag team match
Enzo Amore and Bog Cass vs Chris Jericho and Kevin Owens
Singles match for the WWE United States Championship
Rusev (C) vs Roman Reigns
So there's no gimmick matches on this card which is interesting, but that does lend itself for this ppv to be a showcase of pure wrestling.
The two world title matches are sure to be barn stormers, especially the Rollins vs Balor match, where we're sure to see the debut of 'The Demon' from Balor on the main roster. It's hard to call who wins that match too as I'd be happy with either winning, and either man is a safe bet to be a good champ I think too. I'm going to plump for a Rollins win, but I'm cool with either winning and I wouldn't be surprised to see either man win.
The other is easier, as sadly Ziggler isn't as popular as he used to be. I was shocked when he won the #1 contender match if I'm honest, but it was a pleasant shock nonetheless. He deserves the match for working so damn hard, but sadly I can't see him dethroning Ambrose, who's still very popular and very over. Not that that's a bad thing since Ambrose is an advert for the abnormal. It doesn't matter about your image, you CAN win the world title, and Ambrose is an advert for that.
Orton vs Lesnar is another difficult one to predict for me. Before his drug test failure, Lesnar was winning this one hands down any day of the year. However, I'm not so sure any more. I still see Lesnar winning the match but I don't see it being as clear cut as it was before.
Sasha vs Charlotte is another match that should be very good. I don't see them taking the title off Banks so early so this is a win to put her over I think. I see a long reign for 'The Boss'.
The Miz vs Apollo Crews. correct me if I'm wrong, but this match has had next to no buildup whatsoever? I even forgot it was happening until I checked the card to post here. Given that, I'd hate to see Crews win the title after such a poor buildup. Hopefully they do something in the next week and a half to really grab our interest in this feud, but at the minute I see The Miz retaining.
This John Cena vs AJ Styles clash is an important match. If Cena wins, then to me it signifies that WWE's attitude hasn't changed and that they're not entirely serious about ushering in this new era. Styles is one of the faces of this new era that WWE's preaching about and to me, this is THE match between these two that counts most. Styles has to win it and I think he will.
The tag title match is a difficult one to call, but with Gallows and Anderson taking out Big E, then could that be the key to New Day's reign coming to an end? I wouldn't be opposed to seeing fresh champs, as it's coming to a point where we kind of need new tag team champs I think. New Day as champs are coming close to crossing that line between being great tag team champs and stale ones. I'd like to see them without the titles, so I'm going with The Club winning here.
Cass and Enzo vs Team Canada. This should be another entertaining tag team bout, Jericho and Owens are hilarious together and I wouldn't be opposed to seeing them two continue as a tag team if I'm honest. There's certainly room for another tag team on the roster so why not? I think Enzo and Cass will probably win here, but I could see the Canadians sneak a win just as easy.
How the mighty have fallen. Reigns has gone from main event to mid card title just like that. I could easily see him beating Rusev here though, just so that he's got a title on his shoulder. Kind of "well if he can't have the world title let's just give him the US title" kind of mentality. On the other hand, if Rusev wins here, then that's one hell of a scalp for him to take. And if I'm honest, given how hot Rusev has been as of late, then I can easily see him going over Reigns here. They've been giving his wedding to Lana plenty of coverage so I think they're pretty high on him. On the other hand, they could take the US title off him and move him up to the main event scene... I'm going to go with Rusev winning.
So, what matches are people looking forward too? Do you guys have any hopes and predictions for this show?
