People call wrestling fake because compared to Olympic wrestling or catch wrestling it is. The only "Sports Entertainment" in the world is pro wrestling and, unlike movies, drama or soaps, WWE, TNA et al maintain the idea that's the matches are real. It would be different if there was "Sports Entertainment" in basketball or football as well because then more people would understand what's going on.
Funnily enough I put on WWE Experience last time my Sister's family were visiting and my young niece (she's 4) was getting worried by it. I was explaining it's all pretend and saying things like "look how clever they are" and "it's a bit like trampolining" (she goes to trampolining club) while my sister and brother in law were complaining and telling me to change channels. All the usual "it's rubbish", "why do you watch it?" stuff was flying around while I, with half my attention reassuring a 4 year old, was doing my best to defend it as fun, entertaining, I know it's staged, so is Star Trek (their both losers trekkies) etc. etc. when my brother in law said "I'd rather you were watching UFC, at least that's real."
There you go folks, parents who'd rather their 4 year old watched UFC than wrestling because they can't get their head around "Sports Entertainment". They're not thick either, both have PHDs.
In the end I refused to change the channel until the show had ended and enjoyed whatever match it was they were showing, I remember Sheamus kicking ass but I forget who's, and continued to help my niece enjoy the show by explaining who was who and how they did it.
We'll never win over the masses so I've given up, educate them while they're young, get them hooked for life just like we do with crack!
