How long can The Shield remain united?

Rate this Entry
Dean Ambrose, Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins; THE SHIELD. Undoubtedly 3 of the most promising talents on the current roster. 3 stars in the making, 3 future main-event players.

Debuting with an unexpected appearance at the culmination of the Survivor Series 2012 main event; handing out a match ending triple PowerBomb to Ryback thus aiding CM Punk in achieving a whole year as WWE Champion. It was a surprise to say the least. I had been waiting for Dean Ambrose and Seth Rollins to make their way to the top tier and couldn't have been happier when it finally came to fruition. Admittedly i knew very little of Roman Reigns, but from the moment they showed their unity it was clear the WWE had something special.

After several appearances The Shield stepped up to the plate at TLC 2012, competing in a 3 on 3 TLC match against Team Hell No and previous victim Ryback. And if there where any cynics, any doubters. Then they staked one hell of a claim against them with a event stealing match, even a possible year stealing match.

Fast forward 16 months and it is incredible how far they have come. They have taken down the likes of Sheamus, Cena, Big Show, Kane, Daniel Bryan, Ryback, Usos, Mysterio, Randy Orton, Undertaker, The Rock, Ziggler, Sandow, Mark Henry....the list goes on and on. Reigns and Rollins captured tag team gold at WWE Payback and reinvigorated the division, embarking on a fantastic feud with The Rhodes brothers and where even at points was the only interesting thing about the product. Ambrose captured the U.S title the same night and still holds it now (although the importance has almost deteriorated).

Most recently was the ground breaking feud with The Wyatts. I cannot remember there being a match in WWE, where the fans where chanting "This is Awesome" before a punch was thrown, before a bell had been rung. The atmosphere this feud had created was mesmerizing. And it didn't stop there, the action inside the ring was intense and had me (and i'm sure, millions of others) on the edge of my seat. The promos leading up to their first encounter at Elimination Chamber 2014 was electric from The Shield and the chemistry between the two factions was blatant. Their match at Elimination Chamber stole the show; 8 days later on RAW they did it all again. There is a common denominator to excellence in the WWE and it is The Shield. Aside from Daniel Bryan and his "YES Movement" and The Wyatts. The only consistently great thing in WWE is the Shield.

An implosion within the established group has been brewing. Many expecting it to lead to a triple threat at WrestleMania XXX and put an end to the most dominant and refreshing faction WWE has seen in a long time. But with a seemingly new found energy building within the Shield, the question must be asked; How long can the Shield remain United? Could the Shield continue for another year? This time having a run fighting justice from the inside; rebelling against the Authority? I for one would be behind it 100%. I agree with fans when they say Roman is on fire and needs a push as a singles star. He can still do that, but remain part of The Shield. Rollins is gaining more and more support due to his emphatic determination. Ambrose will be a top heel, but there is plenty of time for that to happen.

Right now, Kane and The Shield have seemingly begun a program. Could it lead to Kane enlisting the help of Harper and Rowan to take on the The Shield in a 6 man tag at the showcase event? Could Kane call up The Ascension? It seems more probable than an implosion occurring within the next 4 weeks. This could lead to The Shield beginning a feud with The Authority and possibly with Reigns getting his push at Summerslam against HHH.

I truly feel that the Shield still have a lot more to offer. Let them run as faces and see how it pans out. I for one see them garnering plenty of support. Especially if they target the Authority and their constant injustice.

What do you think? Should the Shield split as soon as possible and allow all 3 to pursue singles careers? Or does the Shield still have a lot left to give as a unit?

Completely agree with what you've said here; I always thought it was a bit rushed having The Shield split without a face run (said as much in my latest blog post that I submitted over a week ago but STILL hasn't been published).

They are three of the best up and coming talents WWE has right now; admittedly I'd be happier seeing Seth Rollins as the breakout star but understand why WWE is backing Reigns. The possibilities are exciting for what can be done with a face Shield; either as renegades truly acting for justice this time around or as the muscle for a returning face Vince McMahon. The split, handled rightly, can still be huge; possibly even bigger due to where their story goes in either of the scenarios I've just laid out.

    Great post btw.

Yeah i know how you feel; I've had 4 Blogs unpublished. The Shield are far too pivotal on RAW to separate them now. They have so much to offer as a face group; as you said possibly aligning themselves with Vince to start an uprising against The Authority. On one of my neglected posts i had written about Summerslam and the card i would like to see. I think that with The Shield taking on the Authority and Batista and Orton inevitably leaving the title scene due to their mundane characters. Why not build towards HHH re-assembling Evolution and have a very high profile match at the 2nd biggest event of the year: The Shield vs Evolution. This could be the moment where Reigns is betrayed by Rollins and Ambrose. What do you think? You think that would be a possibility?

It's an interesting thought; especially as they need to find something for Batista and Orton to do. If reports are true about WWE having plans to use Ric Flair some more, based on them registering his name as a trademark, then you could have Flair managing Evolution with Vince in The Shield's corner to give it some extra intrigue. But even then I feel that would be too soon to break up The Shield; they were popular as heels so imagine how popular they would become as faces with a major push and the WWE machine behind them.

In an ideal world (or at least my fantasy booking) I'd like to see a one of The Shield (let's say Reigns) take the title at a major event like Summerslam while another member holds the Money In The Bank contract. Then it would make the break up mean a lot more; especially if it's unclear where the third man sits in all this. Is he for the champion or does he feel the member who got the title is too big for their boots and needs showing. I thought the most interesting part of the teased breakup was how Seth Rollins reacted; it provided an interesting dynamic. To me it could be like when Evolution turned on Orton; only bigger because they wouldn't have to satisfy Triple H's ego this time around.

But I have to cautiously say I don't think Reigns, or Bray Wyatt for that matter, are quite there yet in match quality; the singles match between the two on Raw wasn't great in my opinion. They've both taken part in great matches but that was against better and more experienced opposition; at least the elongated face run would give Reigns the chance to improve more before being thrust into the spotlight. Don't get me wrong; I think he could be a huge star. But push him too soon it could damage him in the long run.

But your match idea has money written all over it; though whether it could garner the reaction of The Shield vs The Wyatts I'm unsure. But it all depends on how much WWE put into it; and given that Triple H would be involved then it's likely to get everything behind it. The only stumbling block in my opinion is Brock Lesnar; traditionally Summerslam is where they wheel him out again to boost the buy rate. Recent rumours have alluded to Batista vs Lesnar this year; but that was when they thought Batista's comeback wasn't going to be received in the way it was.

So, to sum it up, I think it's a great idea; but can WWE hold course with a long term booking plan like that in this day and age is the question. I hope they can; but recent evidence says no.

Although i say Summerslam would be a great stage for the eventual implosion of the Shield, i am in agreement with the Hounds of Justice lasting all the way to WrestleMania XXXI, then the break up could happen there in a triple threat match. If you want to talk fantasy booking then why not indulge in the notion that it could be for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. They are already on fire. Just how high could each of the three members climb in the next year? You never know.

I think Reigns and Bray Wyatt are fantastic but agree that they have a way to go before they reach greatness; they are both impact players right now and we will find out in time if they are capable of capturing the attention of fans in one one one action. Reigns showed potential against CM Punk and Wyatt had a brilliant encounter with Daniel Bryan, but that is all i can recall from both. Wyatt will have his chance to shine at WrestleMania XXX of course against Cena. I am really excited for that match. If Evolution is an over-sight, maybe even Reigns vs HHH at SummerSlam?

I like your idea of one of the Shield having the MITB briefcase. That would add yet another layer and would be the ultimate tease of tension and eventual break-up.

I am not sure where Lesnar would fit in. After Taker who would be next? Batista will self destruct before then; with those tight jeans cutting off his circulation. I look at the roster and can't find a viable feud for Lesnar. Maybe Punk returns for a Summerslam rematch....now that is fantasy booking haha

Based on how they have been being used...feud with Kane and apparently the Heel Americans, Old Aged Outlaws and Roid-A$$hole...they will remain together a while. This will lead to a clash with the Authority and eventually some faction involving HHH, Bautista, Orton and maybe Flair!

I think the way to go with Lesnar would be give him the title shot he wants in the storyline and have him face Bryan for the title; gives him something big and builds on Bryan's reputation as the ultimate underdog.

Reigns vs Triple H has potential; I believe it was being mooted as an alternative when CM Punk walked out before they settled on the path they're on now. It would work well because Triple H could lead him through the match like Punk did; if of course his ego doesn't get in the way.

The potential of The Shield, both as a whole and individually, is limitless if handled correctly; just hope one of them doesn't get lost in the aftermath because it would be a real shame.

As for Punk; God I hope they tempt him back soon. Whatever the rights and wrongs of his walkout (and I think he was right; he made a stand for his principles. WWE would be in real trouble if more talent could afford to do so) I feel the show is missing a big piece of the puzzle in his absence.
