Wrestlemania 29 - A More Positive Review (I hope + spoilers)

Rate this Entry
Alright, so Wrestlemania is in the books for the year. And after sitting through the 4 hour PPV, here are my thoughts in my first ever blog post.
First things first, I was one of the unfortunate people who choose to order the PPV online from WWE.com. And I got to see the "Our Apologies - this service is unavailable message".
So that sucked, but thankfully I found a decent stream from a fairly good site, which was watchable.
So this review doesn't have much on the Shield vs Orton, Sheamus, and Big Show match.
So first things first - the IC match. Obviously there to get the crowd started and to give the rest of us something to watch. Decent match, but Miz really seemed almost too pumped for it, it kind of seemed over the top. Also him put that Figure-4 on gave me whiplash just watching his head thrash around. Kind of awkward there, but no matter, on to the PPV!

Match 1 - Missed most of the first match (due to wwe.com), but saw a couple of the spots, I enjoyed the mass of bodies as Big Show speared the triple power bomb. I was disappointed that they chose to have Big Show do the predictable and cost them the match instead of Sheamus or Orton, it was almost an unpredictable move because everyone expected it. But this seems to be the state of WWE creative right now - they seem burnt out and to clear their heads of stale air. I was glad that the Shield continues, I am loving them, something good they have going, and to lose to a ragtag team of former champions thrown together wouldn't do them justice. Now bring on 3MB! (just kidding, although I like those guys)

Match 2 - Ryback vs Mark Henry
Pleased with this match. Henry winning stops him from being the big mean jobber, and having Ryback hit a couple shell shocks (with ease) erases the whole Tensai debacle from a few months back, and keeps him as a powerhouse waiting to get back on top. I was watching this events with some people who had never really watched pro-wrestling before, and they were blown away by Ryback pulling that stuff off, and it reminded me that Henry is more agile that he gets credit for, helping Ryback get him on the shoulders. Overall, it was what we thought, a few big men doing big power moves, but it was good overall, and a lack of botching made it better.

Match 3 - Hell No vs Ziggler and Big E.
So this was a tag match. Nothing really more, and nothing really less. Hell No one, but it is time to drop those titles (Uso brothers anyone?)
I'm glad they didn't drop them to this team, but this felt like a get up and grab a snack kind of match.

Match 4 - Jericho vs Fandango
This match I was disappointed with. Not because it was a bad match, but rather because I had such huge expectations for it, that anything less than a 11 out of 10 match was going to let me down. Fangando proved he can work well in the ring, I found him quite captivating to watch move around the ring (no homo). Jericho was great as always, and outside of an awkward ending, it was fun, just not as great as I was expecting. Shame on me I suppose.

Match 5 - Tons of Funk + Funkadactyls vs Rhodes Scholars and Bella Twins
Just kidding, I feel bad for these 8 performers, I was secretly looking forward to this match, I think it would have been lots of fun and could have got the crowd really going, but at least we were reminded that people like the Rock and Cena wants to win through video package after video package.

Match 5 (for real) - Alberto Del Rio vs Jack Swagger
I'm finally starting to give into Swagger and his schtick. Him and Zeb do well together, it was a great match up with them. Match was okay, I found it funny that Del Rio took RR's crutch and used it to threaten Zeb instead of giving it back to his injured friend, seems like Del Rio could handle Zeb without a crutch. Oh well, we'll just let that go. The worst part of this match was that it felt like a giant setup to Ziggler's MITB cash-in, and we all were left still waiting. I haven't enjoyed the Del Rio baby face too much (his music sounds like a Mexican game show), but I think they are keeping the title on him to grow him as a 'respected champion', but I'm not buying it. Tonight was a great time to put Ziggler on top, but he is still stuck lost in the murk. Hopefully creative does good by him, but their track record isn't great.

Match 6 - Undertaker vs Punk
Good match, the announce table not breaking under Punk looked really painful. Other than that, the usual excitement of the Streak was there, and they did well together. Hopefully Punk now gets some time off to recharge and refocus, he has been the man for so long now, he deserves some time off, and this gives him great opportunity to do so.

Match 7 - Triple H vs Brock Lesnar
Now, I know the crowd didn't seem into this, but I enjoyed it. I thought the match would be much slower and mainly standing and jawing through most of it, but it wasn't. The spots looked painful, and the action stayed fast and heavy. I'm disappointed that Brock lost - mainly because I'm done with HHH, and as much as Brock is in it for the money, there is nothing wrong with letting him win a big one, even if this was HHH's 'retribution' from SummerSlam. Anyways, good paced match and enjoyable from my couch.

Match 8 - John Cena vs the Rock
Let me just say this - I am not a Cena fan. Not one bit, but I was cheering for him tonight. I don't like that the Rock came back, showed up a couple times and got gold around his waist. I don't like that I can't watch WWE programming with my kids because the Rock was decided that he doesn't like the PG era and will use whatever language he wants (yes Dwayne, we all heard the Mother****er during your match), and is as crude as can be building up to it (not a fan of the cookie puss). I am a rare breed that likes the PG era, because it forces the wrestlers to use more than blood, boobs and foul mouths to entertain, but that is for another post. Back to the match. For the first 3/4 of the match, I had to check to see that I wasn't watching last year's match, it was scary how similar they were (less for Rock to remember I suppose). Also, how many Rock Bottoms does it take for that move to become moot? I did get really excited when Cena went for the People's Elbow - only because his face looked like it was time for the heel move we have all been waiting for. But alas, twas not meant to be, and with an AA and a handshake, we bid farewell to another night of great anticipation and dashed expectation.

Overall I enjoyed tonight (and i feel like I will be the minority with that statement). The matches were good, the atmosphere was fun. Not having an backstage moments seemed odd, and a couple of great opportunities (see Ziggler and Cena) seemed wasted, but overall it was a good night, except for that streaming issue.......
Let me know your thoughts, or don't, whatever you want. I love interacting with wrestling fans over the internet (mainly so I don't have to experience the wide variety of smells that cling to each one of you), but if you disagree, let me know. My self worth isn't based on an internet forum, so have at it!
Cheers, or bye or farewell, or something

I just wonder how great this Wrestlemania would have been if Ziggler cashed in. Is that really the one thing that would have separated this WM from pretty good to totally awesome?

Every review I've read has been...WWE creative missed an opportunity with Dolph Ziggler. When it was clearly apparent that he wasn't stealing the show. You think Rock and Cena and HHH and Lesnar are going to get upstaged by Dolph Ziggler? Seriously? That is blind wishful thinking at its finest.

I agree. I don't think that would have been the 'one thing' to make it great, the problem being that the WHC was so flat, I figured it was kept that way for the big pop. Obviously Ziggy would never be able to upstage the big boys, but that doesn't mean it was the right decision to make. Politics will always outweigh fan opinion, but we can still hope for a breakthrough. That is what makes being a fan fun, always hoping for the big moment of our favourite wrestlers. I don't want to become so disillusioned with the behind-the-scenes stuff that I lose the anticipation of something memorable and exciting.

Would there have been a big pop? Is Ziggler really over that much because from what I see, it's still, to this day, two years after hearing everyone saying he's the future and he's the man and all...CRICKETS! When he comes out.

I get that you're a fan, just like you get that I'm not a fan. My initial comment was more about EVERYONE's complaints about no cash-in. I predicted on my Coffee Talk blog that Ziggler would lose in the tag title match, and disappear for the night.

Well put. I am right there with you. Plausible blog by the way. I wish I enjoyed WM29 as much as you.

Interesting read, Soul. I agree with the missed opportunities but I am one of the ones who actually did not really like this year's wrestlemania. I got the same message on my xbox, all i had to do was click OK, and click on the Wrestlemania picture for it to load the stream, kinda weird but I didnt have a problem. I am upset that I paid 60 frackin dollars for that PPV that felt more like an old school Bi-Weekly In Your House that we used to pay between 9.99-14.99 for. SIXTY? But I digress, I think that WWE-PG COULD have been a good idea, if they didn't turn it G. Listen this is a program with mock violence, no offense, but if you let your kids watch that would you have a problem with an occasional shit or fuck? Think about this now, when you stub your toe, or get put in a painful situation I am sure you have at least let that slip out, but THAT IS OK, it really is I am not even being sarcastic, because it is a natural reaction to anger and pain. This is only my opinion and I would not presume to tell you how to raise your children, it is just an honest question? They did good to get rid of the Lesbian Action and the Raunchyness of the attitude era, but they have driven PG so into the ground they have SOLD OUT, not from the beginning, it just gt to that point with it. Pandering to the advertisers and sponsors, which is great business sense, but it leaves us wanting a little bit more. I think however that the lack of excitement for this years WM will lad to creative getting on the ball and bringing us some better programming. What do you think?

By the way thanks for the Blog Post Man, again, interesting read.
