Silly Brit: How Diva's Can Main Event Again

Rate this Entry
Hey there guys and gals! Sorry, it's been a whole while since I've posted here. I'm currently in the middle of hardcore studies in England, training to be a primary school teacher, so the workload has picked up tremendously since I visited the States.

I've been avidly following (albeit offline) the events of the passing months and, whilst The Shield have made an explosive impact, Cena's still going with the 5-moves-and-win scenario and The Rock's great stunt-casting still rolling on, something caught my eye recently that has excited me to no end. And, surprisingly, it was with the women.

Kaitlyn is, by all accounts, a great wrestler: technically gifted and enjoys a supreme ring presence. But recently she's encountered a rather intense rival in Tamina Snuka. I'm all for next generation athletes coming through, but not on their past. I love to see these athletes mould themselves on their own perceptions of their legacy, whilst incorporating their own brand of skills to their set. Their match at Elimination Chamber was, dare I say it, one of the only ones I didn't zone out on. In fact, it was one of my highlights of the night.

I haven't been this excited by a diva rivalry since the days of Trish, Victoria, Molly Holly, Lita and Jazz all took turns (careful now...) fighting for the belt (formerly known as the Women's Championship). Just a fact: the last diva's match to main event either a RAW or SmackDown! show was Trish's last competitive match, way back in 2006/2007. That is a hell of a gap to just leave women's wrestling in the lurch, when there have been some incredibly women's wrestlers in that time (namely Layla, Maryse and Beth Phoenix, to name a few).

This is purely a work of fiction. It's what I would like to happen, but this depends on whether there are any other major storylines going on with more significant wrestlers.

So here's how I would build Kaitlyn and Tamina Snuka's rivalry to main event status...

1) Kaitlyn vs Tamina Snuka at WM29
Here me out, please. Their PPV match at Elimination Chamber wasn't perfect. But it was a damn sight better than the World Heavyweight Championship Match. They told a captivating story of aggression, ruthlessness and a heart to win, which, if you read into a bit closer, was the kind of controlled frenzy that Jimmy Snuka used to fight with. Kaitlyn picked up the win with a great spear and retained. That match lasted 8 minutes. To give you an indication of how much that match might have been valued by management, the average diva's match length on RAW since Summerslam has been just over 3 minutes.
Build those two up with Tamina sitting ringside and studying Kaitlyn's matches. I see Kaitlyn as a 'pride of the south' gal who can bring up NXT diva's to her level, despite her youthful age. Reverse it as Tamina fights the same wrestlers but gets the job done faster.
The week before Wrestlemania, have one of them run interference on the other AFTER the match (let them wrestle, women don't just make sandwiches. From the Zeb Colter school of methdology). Let Kaitlyn help up the stricken superstar and shake their hand and then let Tamina beat them up. Give Tamina a different wrestler and NOT a squash job. Have her try to decimate the wrestler after and have Kaitlyn run in and send her to the ramp. Have Kaitlyn hold up the belt. Cut to Wrestlemania.
The Match - Give them at least 10 minutes, focus on ground techniques and quick counters. A high intensity match should keep the audience interested. Tamina to pin Kaitlyn after Kaitlyn's spear is dodged and she rams her head into the turnbuckle and a quick superfly splash later, Tamina reigns.

The Night After - Tamina gloats backstage. Kaitlyn gives a heartfelt promo in the ring telling the audience she will rise to the top again and get the championship back.

2) During The Course of several RAWs...
Have Kaitlyn talk to Vickie Guerrero, asking for a rematch. Get Kaitlyn to prove to Vicky she deserves it by wrestling against NXT divas. Tamina wrestles too, the champion getting to face the likes of Aksana and Rosa Mendes, not in a squash fashion but dominant enough to show that Tamina is rejuvenated and angry.
Have Kaitlyn talk to several top superstars about her belief. Start off mid card with the likes of Daniel Bryan, talking about how they both came through NXT and to give her usage of the NO! Lock. You could even have a funny segment with Kane, whereby he comes in and goes 'if that doesn't work, group therapy might help...'. Build her up with other top line talent like Sheamus, with him telling her to fight fire with fire (another Kane appearance maybe?) and match her fighting style.
All the while as this is happening, Tamina is getting help from other superstars on the heel side: Dolph Ziggler telling her that she is the champion, she should have some swagger (cue Jack and Zeb to try and enlist her to stop Mexicans from working, I mean, crossing our borders illegally), get her to talk to Big Show and tell her to utilise her strength. Hell, even put her with the Shield with the simple message 'serve justice'. If Brock is still around, get Sable on TV with him and get her to talk about bitchiness and making a statement.

3) Vickie's Part
Have Vicky Guerrero announce that, after weeks of proving herself to Vickie, that Kaitlyn gets her rematch against Tamina. Set it for the next week of RAW and build up the promo-set that night. Tamina comes out, disgusted that someone as weak at Kaitlyn gets a shot. Enter Kaitlyn (with maybe an NXT rookie or two) and speak from the heart. No scripts Kaitlyn!

4) SmackDown... do your thing.
Kaitlyn/Tamina tapes are shown of the rivalry heading to RAW next week. Have the main event being Kaitlyn and Sheamus vs Tamina and Big Show. Finish with Sheamus and Big Show fighting to the back (the sign of any great rivalry is that is creates others: Sheamus and Big Show was heated and great until they stopped it) leaving Kaitlyn and Tamina together in the ring. They brawl it out together and have a good back and forth that lasts roughly 5 minutes. Finish with Tamina sneaking a roll up on Kaitlyn for 3 whilst holding the ropes. Sneaky smile from Tamina as Kaitlyn protests. End show there.

5) Kaitlyn vs Tamina (C) on RAW as the Main Event
Huge. Massive. The biggest diva rivalry in years. Go on Michael Cole, build it up! Go on Jerry Lawler, comment on their cup sizes! The biggest diva main event in years is upon us.
This match should be at least 15 minutes. Whilst I think these two have the power to captivate, they should have someone run interference. Maybe Big Show, who was pummeled by an insiguri by Kaitlyn and wants revenge. Surely he wouldn't hurt Kaitlyn? Have Sheamus run in to make the save. Back and forth as Tamina tries to roll up Kaitlyn again using the ropes, but this time the ref spots it. Go to the outside, ram Kaitlyn into the ring post. Go brutal. Then maybe have Kaitlyn show the battle-back qualities a good babyface has, counter the splash and level the field. Tamina should try for a Samoan Drop but have Kaitlyn counter, ram Tamina into the turnbuckle face first and then spear for the victory. New Champion... Kaitlyn!

It's important to note that this intensity shouldn't drop, but it nearly always does. They did Victoria an injustice to wrestling by having her squashed as her last match in WWE. Don't do the same with these fine women wrestlers. Have them compete alongside men and, for goodness sake WWE... don't align any of then with Zeb! I like him and all but... don't make them too extreme.

Looks like I'm not the only one who actually wants to watch the diva matches! It also makes me happy to see that I'm not the only one who thinks Kaitlyn is a good wrestler. I'm however not entirely hooked on Tamina and I feel like your suggested rivalry would work better with someone like AJ. Oh well, any improvement to the divas division is welcome. The recent usage of the funkadactyls is promising, especially seeing as Naomi has so much potential.

I've said it numerous times... female wrestlers simply dont sell. They dont draw ratings, regardless of how good they are in the ring. The most over female in the industry is Vickie Guerrero. The 2nd most over female in the industry is AJ. Both are more or less managers / GMs / valets. Sure, they will have the occasional in ring match that draws interest, simply because of their management character.

I was a huge fan of Beth Phoenix, but so much for her popularity. Chyna was over because she fought dudes. The majority of women in wrestling should be nothing more than eye candy, valets, managers, etc.

I'd love for the Divas to main event again but don't think it's gonna happen anytime soon. Also I think Kaitlyn vs Tamina doesn't have the potential to be a big Divas feud. Kaitlyn vs AJ does however!
Oh and Kaitlyn vs Tamina at EC lasted 8 minutes including entrances, recap of their backstage brawl and ending. The actual match was only about 4 minutes I think.

ToiletBowl look at TNA's ratings sometime. A lot of the time the women are the highest rated segment on the show. Most of that is to do with the fact they get a chance to work along with having better wrestlers. WWE does let them do a bit on backstage story and stuff but then they have them go out and work a 4 minute match (at least an upgrade from 2 minutes). I don't care if you're the best wrestler out there, no one is going to get over by consistently working non squash match 4 minute matches. There's no time for any psychology to take place.

No it's not. It's because they have sluttier looking women that have far more appeal to wrestling fans. When Kharma won the title ratings for their segments dropped. It has nothing to do with how long they are out there, they'll always draw. And for the Divas it has nothing to do with how long they are out there either but they always tank ratings.

I agree with this, however, I can't see these two main eventing. Don't get me wrong, they would probably be sitting toeards the top of the card, but not the main event. I don't think the divas will ever be at that point unless they start doing some crazy shenanigans with ladders and weapons. In my opinion, the first diva that does that will be seriously over for a good long time.

Kaitlyn vs Tamina doesn't have the potential to be a main event match I believe. However something like AJ vs Kaitlyn or even Naomi vs Kaitlyn vs AJ could be a great main event, if WWE built it up properly, like give them a few mixed tag main events like they did with Trish, Lita and Stephanie during their respective feuds, and have Kaitlyn and AJ have catfights at ringside during Ziggler's matches. I bet even letting Big E. attack Kaitlyn could get her sympathy from the fans and would possibly get her over (it's happened before!!)

@ToiletBowl female wrestlers don't sell?? They did before, and they still can. Wendi Richter vs Fabulous Moolah got MTV it's highest ever rating up to that point. The feud between Torrie Wilson and Dawn Marie attracted larger numbers in their segments than other segments on Smackdown.
Kharma's debut on RAW gained over 333,000 viewers. Trish Stratus' return gained 600,000 viewers and Kaitlyn vs Eve gained 580,000 viewers. Those are the only ones I know of but I can bet there are more!

oh, and just FYI (for the OP) hate to be a nerd, but:
Kelly Kelly and LayCool main evented Smackdown in the WHC mixed tag.
Bella Twins vs Natalya and Victoria was main event on Smackdown
Eve and Daniel Bryan vs AJ and CM Punk was main event on RAW
