I am sure some of you guys are wondering.."wait, I thought Bear said he was going to do a different format with WBC?" Well I am, but here is the twist. Similar to how the WWE has the WWE Championship and the United States Championship, the WBC is going to have the main series where it dwells into a specific topic, and that will be our WWE Championship. Right now, the reigning WBC Champ is Renevious. A blog was posted earlier today, so be sure to check it out and vote which blog you like better. Today though, we are going to crown a new WBC Top 5 Champion. The topic is ladder matches. One stipulation was that no TLC matches could be used. To me, incorporating tables and chairs changes the match type. I did allow Money In The Bank matches though, because it is the same premise of the normal ladder match without any real additions. So without further adieu, lets get into the first competitor. Also, apologies to the first competitor. He included videos, but they wouldn't copy over when I posted it
That's right, the founder of Blog Wars is here and since this is not my show I can go all out.
Top 5 Ladder Matches
This list is going to be hard since there were so many great moments in the history of the ladder match but here goes.
5. Wrestlemania XXI- MITB
That's right I start this off with bang. I have always liked the first one because it was the first and presented us with a lot of surprises and great moments. There were so many amazing moments in this match but my favorite was the T-Bone suplex spot from Benjamin. With that said, this match is 5 because it set the tone for the future, but was not as innovative as 4-1.
4. Summerslam-Jeff Hardy vs RVD for the Hardcore Title
While others may like the title unification match on Raw better, I thought this edged out over it. It was the first ladder match between the two and we got what we expected, a fast pace match where we saw bodies fly everywhere. So great moments were the rolling thunder to Hardy when he on a propped up ladder and the twist of fate of the ladder. This match is what helped the Hardcore title earn more prestige.
3. Wrestlemania 2000- Triangle Ladder Match
That year we had great tag teams, but the 3 that stood out were in this match. This match had some scary spots and really showed how good the tag division was. This match was a setup to the future TLC match these men will go on to have.
2. Wrestlemania X- Shawn Michaels vs Razor Ramon for the IC title
Fans did not know what to expect here as this was the second ladder match. This match was iconic and will always be remembered whenever someone thinks of a ladder match. The moment that stood out the most was Ramon getting the title while Michaels was caught and the splash HBK delivered above.
1. No Mercy- The Hardys vs Edge and Christian
This Ladder match was a match of firsts. It was the first tag team ladder match, first seasaw ladder trick performed by the Hardys, the first back suplex off a ladder, first powerbomb off the top step of the ladder performed by Edge, Jeff hit his first ladder Swaton Bomb onto Christian who was on top of another ladder, Matt performed the first neckbreaker off the ladder and Christian leaped off the in ring ropes to take out both teams who were standing on the outside of the ring. The first time any one attempted that move in a ladder match. Not to mention the crowd went nuts that night and the next night on Raw. This is why I picked this for NUMBER 1.
Great list from Wrestlingfan. Now, onto the other competitor.
I don't want to take up too much time here, but I would like to say that I was glad when I was told this would be the topic as its my favorite match type. I was a bit disappointed when I found out TLC didn't count, but that still left plenty of good choices, so without further ado...
5. WrestleMania 21 - Money in the bank 1
Had to include a Money in the Bank match on this list. This match had all the tools, with ladder specialists in Edge and Christian, the high flying up and comer Shelton Benjamin, a dominant Kane, and two technical legends Chris Jericho and Chris Benoit who as you'll see later aren't strangers to a ladder match themselves. This match set the bar to what a good money in the bank should be, and in my opinion hasn't been surpassed to this day. It had the perfect amount of people, emotion, and plenty of amazing moments. Benjamin running up the ladder is one of the coolest things I've ever seen, and they even included it in the video games. Edge winning was perfect, it added emotion and was one of the better endings to a money in the bank match. Benoit sold the shoulder injury beautifully, and it produced the best MITB winner of all time.
4. Royal Rumble 2001 - Chris Jericho vs. Chris Benoit
This is easily one of my favorite matches of all time. It had everything, technical wrestling, high flying, an some hard hitting action. One of the sickest spots was when Benoit tried the suicide dive and Jericho countered with a chair shot to the head. Another highlight was Jericho locking the walls on Benoit on the top of the ladder. I watched this match as it happened with friends and one of them said he was going for the walls and I didn't believe him, but we all marked when he did it lol. These two had an amazing feud and this was the best way to cap it off.
3. WrestleMania 16 - Edge and Christian vs the Dudleyz vs the Hardys
I would have put TLC 2 in here but TLC matches don't count, but I had to throw these guys a bone. They all raised the bar when it comes to ladder matches. This match was all over the place and each man was looking to help each other and everyone had something to prove. They were taking every risk in the book, from flying off ladders, going through tables, and putting each other through as much hell as possible. Wrestling could stand to have talent like this these days, all trying to make each other look just as good as the main event talent.
2. No Mercy 2008 - Shawn Michaels vs Chris Jericho
One of WWE's last amazing feuds, HBk and Y2J put on one of the greatest matches I have ever seen. They had a classic feud and capped it off the perfect way - with a ladder match. I know I keep saying this but it truly had everything. From hard hitting action, high spots, technical action, psychology, you name it, they had it. The finishing sequence was brilliant, with the belt unhooked and both men playing tug of war; it looked like either one could win. It was one of the last matches I watched and marked out to the whole way through and I will always hold it in high regard. I thought adding the world title to this feud was done perfectly and made it all the better.
1. WrestleMania X - Razor Ramon vs Shawn Michaels
As if there was any doubt this was going to cap it off. This was in every sense the perfect match. It changed everything, it was way before its time, and set the standard to what a ladder match should be. I watched it on tape the first time and was on the edge of my seat the whole time. It's the reason I became an HBK fan, and yeah I'm a little biased because it's one of if not my favorite match, but it's fantastic and everyone should watch it at least once. I have nothing else to say about this, everything has already been said when it comes to this match. It's one of a kind and a true classic that still holds up to this day.
All right guys, great lists from both competitors. Who do you agree with more? Remember to vote, and help crown the first WBC Top 5 Champion!
