Even Newer Perspective on A Cena Heel Turn

Rate this Entry
Welcome Everyone to DKmania!! *waiting for loud, glorious ovation to end*.

I'm back with sort of a follow up, but now, just a newer thought that came across my mind when seeing the rewind of the Cena/Kane segment where Cena viciously took out Jack Swagger. Is that the final sign for the heel turn? Could it actually be happening now? Or will Cena Rise Above Hate, and remain the most hated face?

But here's my new perspective on the whole thing. What would happen if Cena did turn heel? It seems to be what we want. I'm sure the majority of us who watch wrestling and aren't 8 years old, want it. The WWE recognizes this so they tease us every week with it. And thinking about it now. What would it mean if he did turn heel?

I'm thinking that we would like it. But it would be so short-lived because it would have the Stone Cold Effect or CM Punk Effect. See, the kids like Cena because he's like a superhero. Kids love Batman. They love Spiderman. They love Superman. And they love John Cena. When we were kids, or at least, when I was a kid, I loved Luke Skywalker, Superman, Batman, and Hulk Hogan. And some who are a little younger than I am, probably loved Bret Hart. But as we grow, we recognize things getting stale and crave change.

So, what would happen if Cena turned heel? The Austin Effect. The CM Punk Effect. The shocking thing that we would cheer for because we want something different. How popular was the NWO? Half the crowd at every event wore NWO shirts and loved the new concept. Austin started cursing and defying authority and the fans started cheering for him, even though he was top heel at the time. The turn was so drastic that in an instant, Austin became Hoganesque in popularity and the once face of the company, Bret Hart, became a heel.

The same thing would happen to Cena. The kids don't understand so when Cena starts being mean, the kids will be sad. *And Yes, the WWE will be sure to show all their frowns on camera* The kids didn't understand that when CM Punk sat at the top of the ramp and ranted on about being the best "Wrestler" and the crowd went, "oooooooh", it was because the term "Wrestling" was supposed to be outlawed. CM Punk defied authority and they worked his interview to seem like a shoot interview and we all ate it up. We love that stuff. The kids don't get it yet, but we love that stuff.

So Cena turns heel and the kids are sad. And all of us who want him to turn heel because it's new and different, what would we do? We would eventually start cheering him. So if he turned heel, it would be so short-lived it would be almost irrelevant because in his heel turn, he would become a face.

Did I confuse everyone enough with this write? Have a good weekend everyone. Thanks for reading and I'll post again on Monday after Raw.

Great post man you make a great point. A Cena heel turn would be irrelevant if people are going to cheer him lol. Sometimes i wish Cena didn't make wwe so much money so they can be rid of him. I can't see a Cena heel turn being good cuz there's gonna be no surprise feel to it we all expect it to happen and wwe hopes it will make Cena relevant it's just sad.

To be honest I don't see the point of Cena turning heel. Cena does not need to turn heel. He is a good role model for kids whether you hate him or not. If Cena was heel he would still be stealing the spotlight. Yes you did make sense in your blog but he would be a heel that is cheered for. Like Eddie Guerero was a heel and he was still cheered for.

I know Cena turning heel would change his gimmick but plenty of superstars have kept thier gimmick for a long time and they are still cheered for.
So yes you make plenty of sense but still Cena being heel is pointless

Truth be told, until WWE gets away form "PG" its all pretty much garbage. I honestly watch RAW in 15-20 min. cuz the everything is so boring and predictable. My favorite times in present day WWE is when Cena gets hurt and is off TV for a few months. I honestly dont even know why I still watch it. Bring back the days with DX and NWO, and a silent "crow like" Sting. The attitude era had humor, excitement, sex appeal. Todays WWE has none of those things. At least I used to have enjoyable TNA to watch until Hogan and Bishoff came and ruined it all. Bring back the original ECW, and the old TNA; cuz todays wrestling is pure crap and Cena is the worst of it.

@cnoevl21 The Attitude Era was great because it was new, and because that era wasn't dominated by "political correctness" and sponsors. If the WWE went back into full on Attitude Era mode, WWE would get hammered by sponsors and parents turning off the channel. Edginess and a willingness to let the wrestlers be more adult than kiddie is needed, but what REALLY needs to happen is a complete overhaul of creative and how they build wrestlers and shows up. The 80s were largely kid friendly oriented, but they didn't suck because storylines were interesting.

It should've been when Nexus launched that Cena turned to lead them - that was the time to turn him. Anything now seems like too little too late.

Agrees with this. People forget their was an era before the Attitude Era. And like it or not we are living in a new one. Besides, the Attitude Era had it's lame moments as well. Like World's Strongest Man as Sexual Chocolate getting Mae Young pregnant, and then she gives birth to a hand. Their our many things they need to bring back from the past eras, but the attitude ain't necessarily one of them.

brilliant short and sweet blog and great discussion. Cena will be whatever you want him to be. To all us IWC followers, he is already heel, and we hate him. i will always have a soft spot for the attitude era, but its more exciting to me not knowing whats ahead than going back and reliving the past.
