STATE OF THE 'E: It's Only Smoke And Mirrors

I know, I know "WHERE THE HELL IS PART 3 OF FCW?!?!?!?" fact of the matter is, there's other things I feel like I want to talk about. We'll eventually get back to FCW, I promise. But, there's something I've been wanting to discuss full on for a while now. And that is: Cody Rhodes.
Yes, one of the hottest topics in WWE right now, holder of the Intercontinental Championship and a damn fine all around athlete. This man has developed from a mediocre performer into one of the most solid guys THE 'E has on their entire roster. And this is QUITE an achievement for a man a couple years ago everyone wrote off as just another "Generational Star Doomed To Suffer".
When he first got into THE 'E, he struggled quite a bit. They teamed him with Hardcore Holly eventually and they created a "Mentor/Pupil" role for one another. Things were going very smooth for Cody as he picked up the Tag-Team Championships , his first WWE Gold. This was a great accomplishment for someone new to the 'biz and for someone who was teamed with Holly.
Holly didn't take to kindly to the younger guys and went legit with quite a few of them. And it didn't help that Cody was the son of Dusty Rhodes. Holly always felt threatened and lashed out against everyone backstage. This was something that Cody was unfortunately feeling the wrath of with his character and the split that happened when Ted DiBiase was brought onto the scene. The aging, crazy Holly was taken away and given his "Future Endeavors" and the new tag-team of "Priceless" was created. Of course now a young team like this needs guidance, in steps Randy Orton.
Under this trifecta, "Legacy" was born. They tried a fourth member quite a few times but it never panned out. Legacy was rather mediocre to be honest. Nothing truly great came from the team. Tag-Team Championships for Cody/Ted of course and WWE Championship for Orton but, nothing ever actually felt... special.
A few months down the road, the team split up and had a three-way match against each other. It basically turned into "Pricelss" against Orton but in the end, the Master prevailed over his pupils. WrestleMania XXVI saw what everyone thought would be the end for Cody Rhodes. Many people were writing him off. Everyone thought Ted was going to get the rub, and technically, they were right. He was thrown in with The Million Dollar Championship, give Maryse, the main role in "The Marine II" (Electric Bugaloo)... all of it. In no uncertain terms, THE 'E made it undoubtedly clear who they were getting behind.
Then, it flopped. DiBiase turned out to be still VERY green on his own. No charisma, no mat skill, just bland and blah. Cody however was given no gimmicks for a bit and flopped around aimlessly. All of that changed for him when they gave him the "Dashing" gimmick. Many people started paying attention to his tips and tricks for becoming a well groomed male... how to brush your teeth, wash your hair, clean this, do that... everything. He became an internet darling and his theme music rocked.
All of a sudden with that gimmick, he took off. THE 'E apparently didn't want that for some reason... so, they had Rey Mysterio do the 619 and it "turned him disfigured." (In his own, "twisted" mind of course.) and it honestly felt like he was going to be doing "the job". They took away a gimmick that should have been on fire.
This "undashing" gimmick was something to bury him, point blank. For some reason though, he rised above it and turned it into something interesting and new. This gimmick has been going VERY strong now since Marchish. It lead him to a WrestleMania XXVII victory against the very person who made him "disfigured" in the first place, Rey Mysterio. That match solidified his place as a next generation star who will take his career to crazy heights.
As the months rolled on, THE 'E rewarded him and gave him even more layers to his gimmick and even gave Ted something to do for a few weeks. Cody beat Ezekiel Jackson for the Intercontinental Championship over two months ago now and is still going strong, tonight he even beat his former master, Randy Orton.
2010 and now 2011 have proven to be very successful years for Cody, they're giving him the "slow build" which is something we haven't honestly seen since The Miz rose to prominence. The cream always rises to the top as they say. And it seems like Cody will be at the top soon enough. I actually wrote about this close to 3 and a half months ago now.
I for one am glad that he didn't disappear behind those smoke and mirrors. I cannot wait to see what the future hold for him, I honestly believe he is in the top 3 of the future of THE 'E.3.) CODY RHODES - Yes. A million times yes. Remember when we all thought DiBiase would be the major breakout star from The Legacy? Yeah, look at the egg on our face now, eh? Good thing we have these paper bags over our heads to save ourselves. I'm awaiting the day when he finally steps up and all the smoke and mirrors finally go away. He needs a singles Championship. Stat!
I'm done on this one, please leave comments, tell me how pretty I am and bash me if you want as well. See Ya' Space Cowboy...
