Cena Heel Turn: MISTAKE

Rate this Entry
Sup y'all. Third blog today. That's what happens when you drink wine and use Sheiky Baby's "medicine."

I think this idea of a Cena heel turn is well-meaning but not a good business idea. What is it going to accomplish? Here are the typical reasons why people go heel:
1) For some reason they're not quite over as a face. they need to get vicious and beat the living hell out of some people to be taken seriously. not a big issue for "super cena."
2) Split with a faction, tag-team, etc. Not relevant.
3) To balance out the heel/face ratio, and here's one of the big issues. JR has said that in every company there is "the man." One guy. That's John Cena. Who is your top babyface when John Cena is a heel? Orton? Nah man, nah. It's good that they're using him to put Christian over as WHC right now but when that program is finished Orton has got to turn heel.
4) To really shake things up and turn shit on its ear a la Hollywood Hulk Hogan. Well, CM Punk is turning things upside down just fine right now, thank you, not to mention the major shit going down with HHH replacing Vince on-screen as boss.
Here's the other thing: what precedent is there to turn John Cena heel? There are comparisons to Hogan, of course. But When Hogan went heel, he was in a different company and a different era. Maybe a few years down the line the Cena turn would make sense. The reason Hogan went heel is because his fans grew up and turned on him. Basically we have to wait for two things before Cena will make an honest to god heel turn. We need someone else to be able to take that top spot. That's gonna be Punk, Orton, or Daniel Bryan. Punk and Orton would both be tweeners and Bryan would be sort of a modernized Bob Backlund. Maybe in a few years Morrison will be ready. Who knows? It's got to be somebody though. One thing you'll notice if you pay attention to WCW is that when Hogan was a heel and half the company was in the nWo, it was hard to come up with a solid top babyface with staying power. Yeah there was DDP and they tried some other guys and whatever. What gets to me is that Flair and the Horsemen were faces which is wrong. Babyface Flair vs heel Hogan? F that, and F babyface Orton vs Heel Cena. The other thing we're waiting for, which is just as important and just as pertinent to the Hogan discussion, is for the Little Jimmys to hit puberty. The yellow and red, super duper hero type thing was not cutting it in the latter half of the 90's and if you just give it time the "Cenation" (dumb name) will probably find itself in decline as well.

I read the title and I agree, I don't need to see your arguments, but finally some sense...

I like your blog and I agree with most of what your saying but I have to admit that Cena needs a heel turn.

One reaso you forgot to mention why people turn heel is because of stale gimmicks. People like Cena, Kofi Kingston & Rey Mysterio have had the same dry gimmick forever. Its boring if you ask me.

I think if Cena, Rey & Kofi turned heel, then the WWE universe would be flipped upside down and thats good business. I love Cena but his gimmick is stale.

Anyway, I loved your blogged and you made perfect sense my friend. I just think Cena needs that heel turn so he can remain fresh. WCW were killing the WWF in the ratings war because everyone's childhood hero Hulk Hogan turned heel. Could you imagine Cena in the ring cutting a heel promo and the crowd throwing trash at him?

Yea I agree with everything you said. I'm not a big Cena fan, but I'm not Anti-Cena either. I do agree with what people say about SuperCena and I think it is ridiculous too. I liked Cena when he was Thuganomics Cena, as corny as he was sometimes, at least it was more entertaining. That's why when the Rock came back and he started to freestyle I felt like he was going to do that. He's really the Tim Tebow of the WWE. He just portrays this perfect guy who can do no wrong and must do right by everyone. A very commendable attribute, but it has run a bit stale.

But if they did try it, I think the only way it would work is if they went the Stone Cold route when he turned heel. Acting exactly opposite of what he usually did, losing matches or cheating to win. Because to this day, I still get goosebumps when I watch Austins return to save WWE from the invasion. But I don't know if they'd be able to do this with Cena.

I just started doing this blog stuff man. I wrote my first one yesterday and it'd be cool to get some feedback from the vets. Check it out and let me know what you think.

@knox First order of business: "Legend in the Making" sounds dope. Now I totally agree with you that Kofi and Rey are stale as well and that staleness of character is good cause for a heel turn. It's just about that merch, man. I just have to agree with Good Ol' JR: they will make less money with Cena as a heel. Would I love to see that shit you were talking about? Absolutely. I just don't think it's the right business move for them.
@The Resh Thanks for the feedback. It's so nice to be here where people care enough about the great art of wrestling to check out what I have to say. I'm no vet duder but I'll read your shit for sure.

Thanks alot DM for the props on the song, I really appreciate it bro. I'm really trying my best to push it to the WWE so they can use it for Night of Champions.

And yea could you imagine Kofi Kingston as a heel. Lol click the link below and tell me this would be a perfect heel theme for Kofi.

@knox: With Rey turning heel he wouldn't sell as much merchandise. Hes been a face for such a long time for good reason-hes a moneymaker. Also, people usually cheer for the high-flyer face, so that's even more reason to keep him as he is.

@DM Tea: Agree with your opinions about Cena.
