Hey guys, this is about football. (Soccer)

I love a bit of banter. As do most football fans.

Leave your team name and your predictions ahead of the new season.

And anything else for that matter

Who's going down, who's going to finish where?

Leave your comments here.

Btw I'm a liverpool fan ;)

As an avid Arsenal supporter, i am really hoping that this is the year that the young guns finally get to the top where they belong.
This could be a tricky season for Man United as they have bought very little this summer but like always, will come close as will Chelsea.
I am interested to see how well hodgeson can do with a broken Liverpool team but he saved Fulham last season, but i dont think anymore than a top 3. Man City have spent too much and are expecting instant success, which i hope they wont get. I can see this season being extremely tight, which make for good games.

@niafv1: Arsenal huh?.. What are your predictions for the game?

I'm a little cautious as Arsenal always do very well on opening days. And on the other hand I can see Liverpool turning in a dominate performance.

I agree with you about Man City. Its almost not fair at the same time. I think If they carry on like this they'll ruin the league. Then again, the new 25 man rule might have a few things to say about that.

@Rangers_Chosen_Hun: Hmmmm Celtic have bought a lot of players this year. Rangers I believe are selling and not buying. I like Rangers more than Celtic though lol. I can see Hearts doing very well though for some reason. It would be nice to see someone different in the top 2.

@dre-dray: the match could set up a good season for either team.
If liverpool lose, it could lead to more spreculation about the team not being as united as they need to be. Also, should arsenal lose, i dont expect anything more than a top 4 again. I see it being extremely tight, either 1-0 orelse a draw. I do think that man united will drop points at newcastle.

Come on Liverpool!!. Saw some good things from that game, we looked good. I have high expectations.

Man utd and Chelsea look good too, but let's face it they were against newly promoted teams.

With Man City just bringing in new player left right and centre.

What's going to happen now?

Leave your comments here. ;)

Another gooner here. Season started pretty well, but the usual injuries are bound to kick in and ruin it for us. Already we have Robin Van Porceline out for 6 weeks. Thankfully Walcotts injury wont keep him out too long. Bloody internationals are a pain in the butt.

People measure greatness diferently, I suppose! To change my words slightly, America isn't "hated" as such, just known for ignorance amongst its people - which you display so perfectly here. America, loved round the globe, REALLY? Do you watch CNN or something?

Another point, is USA the only country people immigrate to? Not at all. Infact, I know many Americans in my town who left places like NYC and Chicago because thet didn't like it. Preferring, in their words, a more "care-free" lifestyle.

But I forgot, in the eyes of a lot of American people, its the only place where good things happen, and the rest of the world is grey and filled with hate :p

I guess I started it off badly by saying soccer sucks, it really doesn't I was just trying to goat someone in for a response and it worked.;) (I have an asshole gene) Although I'm not a soccer (football) fan, I have been to many MLS Columbus Crew games and they are always fun, especially on dollar bratwurst and beer nights.

We take it seriously because we invented the sport. Football (soccer to you guys) is the most popular sport in the world. You might wanna watch a match. You might be surprised by what you see.

IPEEINTHESHOWER would appreciate it if you got your facts right young man. You might want to put that bong down and realize in 50 BC China was the one who invented the sport resembling soccer. Google Cuju, that was played in the period betweeen 476 BC-221 BC in CHINA. The romans also had thier own version of modern day soccer. In fact, this Roman sport also featured in the early Olympics that were held in Rome, wherein two teams, each consisting of 27 individuals, competed with each other. As the sport had no authenticated basic soccer rules or soccer strategies and tactics, it turned out to be a no-holds barred game, with several players ending up being hospitalized due to the injury they suffered in the game, which was played only for about an hour.

I'll give credit to England for the introduction to the FA Cup in 1871 but to say they invented soccer is not true.

One of the most interesting facts about soccer is about the prohibition of soccer in England. In the 14th century, King Edward of England passed a law threatening to imprison any person who would be caught playing the sport, which was strikingly similar to soccer. The king's proclamation stated the following:

"For as much as there is a great noise in the city caused by hustling over large balls, from which many evils may arise, which God forbid, we command and forbid on behalf of the King, on pain of imprisonment, such game to be used in the city future."

"For as much as there is a great noise in the city caused by hustling over large balls, from which many evils may arise, which God forbid, we command and forbid on behalf of the King, on pain of imprisonment, such game to be used in the city future."

please allow me to give my infinite wisdom on the many reasons soccer sucks.

Why Soccer Sucks

The ever-growing list of reasons why soccer sucks.

Soccer participants actually fellate one another.
Soccer participants are walking advertisements.
France is successful at participating at soccer. That should say something, especially to the British.
The "World" Cup is not the a World's Cup, but a competition among 32 countries, disproportionately allotted to European countries.
Soccer hooligans.
Soccer is boring. Soccer is absurdly slow. I've had soccer apologists say with false pride how the average soccer participant "runs" 4 miles in a game. Newsflash: that means they are jogging less than 3 miles per hour. Translation: they are mostly standing around. BORING.
Soccer participants act like they've been shot - what pussies. Meanwhile, real athletes like Donovan McNabb or Bobby Baun play on broken legs.
Soccer is too simple an activity.
Penalty kicks. You are determining a winner by a random event that has no relevance to the rest of the game. It would be as stupid as replacing extra innings with batting practice.
Fruity penalty cards. How stupid is it to flash up some card to indicate the severity of a penalty? Richard Simmons was inspired to use them in his diet system. Are all penalties the same? Again, the inability to use the upper torso hampers soccer participants. Use hand signals, you troglodytes.
Psychotic fans. The South Korean loser who set himself on fire is one example. The mental stability of the murderer who killed that one player because he sucked (free clue: all soccer participants suck) is another.
Ties: 55% of games are ties. Ties suck.
Why not use your hands? Or your brain?
Soccer participants do not bathe.
Soccer hairdos.
Pompous pseudo-intellectual Europeans who become soccer fans in order to convince the populace of their link to the common man.
Soccer participants with one name. I can understand why your parents would disown any soccer participant, but they should take at least any last name.
Soccer hilites concentrate on what almost happens. When ESPN has the poor sense to show soccer hilites, they show missed shots, missed passes, etc. Any real sport shows things that actually contribute to the result. Soccer participants do not care about the result.
Soccer fans justify the activity based entirely on its popularity. Not only are the reasons why soccer is popular an argument against soccer, but it really shows how pathetic said activity is when that is the only argument soccer fans come up with.
The correct term for 0 is zero, not nil. Take a math class.
Buy a freaking cup, you pansies.
Soccer is not objective. There is no play clock. The game doesn't end after the clock has run down. This adds bias, subjectivism and appeals to lower intellects, and it destroys the drama from last second victories. Contrast such clumsy timekeeping (shame on the Swiss, who should know better) and the lack of any discernable strategy with the strategic precision of the two-minute drill in football.
Soccer is not objective, part two. The lack of offensive chances leads to ties, which, as we know, suck. Soccer's "solution?" Let's randomize the result (in those cases where a tie suddenly becomes an affront, the "World" Cup) by having penalty kicks.
Soccer participants on the same team have different jerseys. The obviously higher intelligence of hockey (goaltender) or football (offensive linemen) fans and referees is evident, since we don't need a different uniform to indicate a different privilege in the rule book.
Soccer is Third World inexpensive. Ordinarily, this would not be a problem. Most people don't consider buying hockey or football equipment expensive in civilized countries, but in the context of the rest of the world, it is expensive. On the other hand, soccer is dirt cheap - and by dirt cheap, I mean slum kids in Brazil rolling up balls of dirt to kick around.
Soccer apologists say the reason it is not popular in the US is because it wasn't invented in the US. First, soccer originated from the North American game called pasuckuakohowog several hundred years before the British played something resembling it. Second, basketball was the creation of a Canadian, yet is very popular in the US. Third, football was the creation of a Canadian, yet is very popular in the US.
Soccer apologists say the reason it is not popular in the US is because the US is not any good at that activity. The US soccer team won the World Cup in 1991 and 1999. Better find another reason.
Soccer apologists say soccer is an athletic activity. Using the Olympics as a barometer, it is pretty obvious that those countries that lack athletic prowess (Britain, France) are successful at soccer. Interesting to note, despite the inclusion of activities like soccer and walking in the Olympics (and the wrongful exclusion of football and rodeo), how those countries where soccer is not popular outperform those countries where soccer is popular athletically.
Soccer apologists steal terms from real sports. Hint: a pitch is something an option QB does. A draw is a running play designed to counter a strong pass rush. Football is a real sport that involves athletes in pads and helmets, not sissies playing kickball.
Soccer has no honor. There are codes of behavior in sports like hockey, baseball, football and basketball. There is no code of behavior in the activity of soccer: the penis biting should make this fairly obvious.
Soccer markets to Nazis - even today. Umbro markets Zyklon, a type of shoe, to soccer participants. Zyklon was the name of the gas used to kill Jews in WWII.
Soccer uses witch doctors. The same simplistic mentality that avails itself to soccer avails itself to primal mysticism.
Soccer idiots overexaggerate everything. Yeah, soccer deserves a Nobel Prize. Better load up on the security for that award presentation, because soccer deserves it less than terrorists like Arafat. Yeah, a soccer game is a wondrous event in your nation's history. Granted, these nations still have to master indoor plumbing, but please - stop the hallucinogenics, now.
Soccer fans actually set themselves on fire. That's a pretty good barometer judging the mentality of soccer fans.
Soccer cheering has no point. Football fans successfully cause opposing teams' offenses to call timeouts, use up the play clock, screw up audibles or cause procedure penalties. Ask Burt Hooton whether baseball fans affect an opponent's performance. Soccer? They sing songs - which all sound the same - regardless of outcome. It doesn't celebrate performance. It doesn't serve to intimidate. It has no purpose.
Soccer counts time up. Soccer games count the time that has elapsed, rather than the time remaining. This is stupid for a number of reasons. First, soccer games don't refer to time anyway, so why even keep it? Second, why the concern on the past? The score already reflects all important information of what has already happened in the game. In soccer, this is most likely irrelevant anyway, since the score is most likely 0-0, er, nil, nil. The focus should be on the result - which depends on the future. Thus, time should count down. Can you imagine NASA counting up (from, say, when JFK made his speech about landing on the moon in a decade)? How stupid would that be?

need I say more?????????

As a Liverpool fan I don't won't United to win the league, as they would set the new record for title wins, but at this stage of the season there's no team like Utd that pull out the important wins.

I never really had faith in Arsenal to do us any favours to be honest, especially after that 4-4 at Newcastle and the 2-2 draw at WBA. They just don't seem to have the drive and hunger like Utd do. As for Chelsea I had them down to win the league, that's obviously not going to happen now, don't be surprised if you see Torres sold this summer.

For relegation, I honestly can say, with a few point separating pretty much the bottom half of the table its too close to call.

People complained that the top 4 are dominating england. But for most of the season United, Spurs, Chelsea, Arsenal, Man City were all pretty close.
In spain there's 28 points between barca and valencia (1st and villareal). Italy: 18 points between Milan (1) and Roma (4).
In the EPL there's 11 points between United and city (1st and 4th). Spurs are 17pts off and Liverpool are 19pts off. The EPL is a lot closer that both. People say the spanish league is the most entertaining but there's a HUGE gap and you can usually predict the top 10 every year.
In england you are definitely right; the gap in ability is definitely closing.

I'd be up for that mate. But unfortunately, don't have the time to organise it.

I could organise it if i remember..
Everyone has to pick a starting 11 and 5 subs, a maximum of 2 players from each team.
Defenders and Keepers get 1 point for playing, 2 for a clean sheet, 3 for a goal
Midfielders get 1 point for playing, 1 for a clean sheet, 3 for a goal
Strikers get 1 point for playing, and 3 for a goal
Any player that gets a yellow card loses 1 point
Any player that gets sent off loses 5 points
Any player injured loses 1 point
You can only change players in your team if they are injured, or sent off, so pick wisely !
Subs only score points if a player in the starting 11, of the same position, does not start.
Each week you add your scores up, post them, then we'll work out a total by the end !

I know this isn't Barclays Premier League but one of these teams may be soon and there is no Championship thread.
With Swansea through after beating Forest tonight and Cardiff seeming to have the advantage over reading as Wednesdays game is a home game for them meaning it looks like a Welsh team is getting promoted to the Prem, is anybody else disappointed that a Welsh team will be in the English top division or is it just me? I personally want to see Reading get promoted as Brian Mcdermott has done a great job but out of the two Welsh teams I'd have to go with Cardiff because I like their players and they may sign Bellamy permanently, also Dalglish for a knighthood.

So, as you can imagine a lot of people in the UK are going to have twitchy bums this weekend. 2 of 5 teams will go down. As a Wolves fan i am not looking forward to this weekend! However i have a question.

Does anyone know what happens if 2 teams finish on the same points AND goal difference? What decides who stays up? I asked this at work the other day and i got all sorts of answers but noone seemed to know for sure... Some thought it went on away goals, some thought it went on games won. Some even thought it went to a deciding match between the 2 teams! Does anyone know for sure? Reason i ask is if you look at the table theres a damn good chance that teams could finish on the same points and goal difference :)

Syph, let me clear up your problem. This is the FA rulings;

http://www.premierleague.com/staticFiles/7a/20/0,,12306~139386,00.pdf
Points 23 + 24

23.If any 2 or more Clubs have scored the same number of points and have the same goal
difference the higher or highest placed Club shall be the Club having scored the most goals in
League Matches in that Season.

24. Subject to Rule B.31, if any 2 or more Clubs have scored the same number of points, have the
same goal difference and have scored the same number of goals in League Matches in that
Season they shall be deemed to occupy the same position in the table.

So hypothetically, let's say Wolves lose 1-0 and blackburn concede 7 and score 1 - This would place wolves and blackburn on 40 points, -20 goal difference AND44 goals scored.

Now blackpool (1-0) and Wigan (1-0) pull out wins and go to 42 points and birmingham lose (1-0). The bottom 4 in the table would look like this;(for demonstration we say west ham (1-0) lose although they are bottom whatever happens)

GP W D L F A GD PTS
Blackburn 38 10 10 18 44 64 -20 40
Wolves 38 11 7 20 44 64 -20 40
Birmingham 38 8 15 15 36 57 -21 39
West Ham 38 7 12 19 43 68 -25 33

Technically, Blackburn and Wolves would BOTH finish in 17th place so the question is; Who goes down now?
There is no actual rule after them both claiming 17th - so I'm guessing it would come down to a play-off or lottery.

I believe head-to-head record is after goal difference since La Liga do head-to-head record and then goal difference.

Man United have only dropped 2 points at home so Blackpool have to work hard sunday.
Wigan have lost 9-0 to spurs before so completely up to Wigan on how they show up, they have survived before though so they may pull it off.
Birmingham are just weird, they won the League Cup but have been so poor in the league.
Wolves vs. Blackburn could also be a massive factor

Also Manchester City could steal 3rd from Arsenal which would be interesting lol

Carlo Ancellotti has been sacked as Chelsea manager. Whilst I really dont have have anything good to say about Chelsea, I really think that it's SHIT that managers get sacked for stupid fookin reasons. I mean, Chelsea came second (9 points behind UTD - come on!) but this is not really a good enough reason to sack their manager. Theyve had 7 managers in 6 years (?) and this is how the prem league is going. Ferguson, Wenger and Moyes are the longest serving managers and TBH, nobody else stands a chance.

Just saying...

I completely agree but I am blinded by King Kenny and the success he has brought back to Liverpool since the start of his second reign. This is the start of a rebuilding process at Liverpool and they should take it one step at a time, first they need to get back in the top four which I really do believe will happen next season and then they will continue to build until they are once again the team with the record league title wins.

This is the start of a rebuilding process at Liverpool and they should take it one step at a time, first they need to get back in the top four which I really do believe will happen next season and then they will continue to build until they are once again the team with the record league title wins.

I can't see us winning the league for a while yet...too many bad signings and not enough passion...although King Kenny has done wonders thus far....see what happens when you put a LFC Legend in charge? lol.....bring on next season I say, let's chase the 'most leagues won' title from Utd's hands now....

I know, Poulsen, Jovanovic are just two of many terrible signings over the years that led to the recent decline aswell as Hicks and Gillett ruining the club.

Yeah...and with our two work horses (Stevie G and Carra) getting on a bit on footballing terms....I'm seriously concerned right now...we need some Scouse passion, some homegrown boys to show these foreigners what English football is all about!

It wasn't all Aquilani's fault, the long injury, adapting to the Prem, playing in a different position and Rafa dipping him in and out of the team when he wanted didn't help. De Gea is a great signing and will take the Spain NO.1 from Casillas who is overrated IMO, I personally think Reina, Cech, Hart and Van Der Sar are the best 4 keepers in the world and that Reina should be Spain NO.1 and probably would be if he went to Barca instead of Liverpool.

Yeah I'm also concerned Gerrard without constant injuries is one of the worlds best players and Carragher is outstanding, underrated by a lot of people. Martin Kelly is gonna be great I just don't think spearing can quite cut it, he's a decent player though.

Casillas is eccentric. He's one of those keepers that play amazing most of the time then sometimes does something stupid.
Hart had a howler of a game against the Swiss today.

I'd say VDS, Valdes, Cech, Casillas. Casillas is a really good keeper and he's shown it by being consistantly in the Real Madrid team. Not many people can hold down a permanent spot in that team over a long period of time unless they are great.

I hope we don't get destroyed.

We would need to play a lot better than we did against the Swiss, without Johnson or Milner playing, hopefully.

And Gerrard should be there, as should Rooney.

Yeah that game on Saturday was awful, Ashley Young should of started and Rooney and Gerrard were missed. Lampard had a poor game (again)I'm sorry Chelsea fans Lampard has lost that tiny bit of ability he had, he's only in the team on merit and becuase Gerrard is injured.

Should be a good game though, hopefully free-flowing football (mainly from Holland)

Exactly, at least you get to see a quality side such as Holland play.

Amen to that, thats why I choose this game instead of Switzerland even though it was more expensive. I'm glad I didnt waist my money going to watch that poor display on Saturday but England should have this group in the bag with the quality they have.

A good choice man, although I quite like some of the Swiss squad, Shaquiri and Xhaka were impressive.

Excellent point, but you know that Brucie can sometimes hit a diamond.

I mean, Gyan is a great player, I watched Sessegnon when he played for PSG and he's a great footballer.

Who do you think you will get/need in the summer?

I'd agree with that, Richardson isn't a natural left-back, you need a striker more than a centre mid for me, Cattermole/Sessegnon will be a good partnership next season.

I'm a Man United fan, so I'm very pleased with your team giving Welbeck massive experience, do you think he had a good season?

Sorry to take you back from you mate, but Sir Alex is a big fan of his, as am I.

I'm just pleased he got the game time to improve his development at a top quality club, he will be majorly involved next season I feel.

I thought Bardsley had a great season at left back, Welbecks game against Everton (scored 2) and the 3-1 against Chelsea were 2 of his great moments from the past season.
