Hey everyone! As some of you may or may not know, the TNA vs NJPW! thread is slowly turning to a New Japan Pro Wrestling thread.

So I decided to start a thread dedicated to both Japanese and Lucha Libre styles of wrestling.

So you can post matches or talk about the International matches or wrestlers here.

(Kash I loved both matches. Tanahashi vs Shiozaki was great! Devitt vs Ibushi was just intense. I wanna see their title fight at WrestleKingdom 5!)

He wanted to keep his health brother! And he wanted to do as little as possible for the most amount of money possible. Remember Summerslam? 2 moves for like 20 seconds and he makes more than what an average wrestler makes in a week.

Firstly, let me say well done to SG!!! I think i'm gonna enjoy this thread. Expect plenty of bumping ; )

For my first post I shall keep it relatively simple and focus on my favourite Japanese wrestler..... Ever.

Not the best, just my favourite!

His name is KENTA (all caps!!!)

To start with, here's a MV that i found on YT.... It's the perfect introduction to this great Junior Heavyweight if you've never seen him do his thing.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EVvOCIDjAJk

The first time that I really took notice of him was while he was in one of the best tag teams ever!

I'm back again, this time I'll focus on the greatest Jr Heavyweights of all time. These two had phenomenal matches together and were perfectly matched for each other. The character of Tiger Mask is actually a well known super hero in Japan and it translated very well into wrestling. The innovation put on display by these two pioneers was lightyears ahead of their time! After these two went at it in the semi-main event fans were known to leave the arena, as they knew the main event had no chance of topping what they had just witnessed. Tommy Billington and Satoru Sayama inspired generations with their wizardry in the squared circle. Allow me to show you why.

This is Sayama's debut as Tiger Mask from 23/4/81

Wrestle Kingdom V has hit YouTube.

In case you happened to miss that one thread in the TNA section, here is the video card/hype video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5iBpKt2ITYM

Now, onto business. Two different versions exist:

There's a user who uploaded just the matches, cutting out most of the entrances and talking and stuff - ideal for the non-moonspeak crowd. The first match (dark) is here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tv2vhx_cZko), should be simple enough to find the others from there (PROTIP: the ones marked 1/4/11: 0-1 and 0-2 being dark matches, then 1 through 11)

Another user uploaded the entire event in three huge parts. Part one (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c5Qvi6YtyeI), aaaaaaaaand part two (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lGdT3jbbG-w). You may have noticed I haven't linked to part three - that's because it hasn't been uploaded yet. Should be shortly I guess.

Have fun.

Yeah, I've watched it now and it's probably the worst match on the show so far. Still kinda decent though.

Ibushi vs. Devitt gave me a half-stiff, awesome stuff. Prince Devitt could easily be a huge star if he ever decided to wrestle in the west for ROH, or WWE, or anywhere really.... Not that he has any reason to like, since he's already majorly over and making tonnes of cash over there.

Devitt's success in japan is a thing of beauty! He's kinda like the 2011 version of the Dynamite Kid/Chris Benoit in terms of being the top gaijin Jr Heavyweight in NJPW. I'm sure the door is wide open for him to go to WWE, should he choose to do so.

I know he employs a Puro style, but I've never really seen him as someone I'd like to see in Japan. Then again, I thought the same about A-Train!
They must have plans for him if they signed him to a year's deal. Good for him!
Wonder if they'll let him wear his jumpsuit, that he wore to cover his Malcom X tattoo?
Also, here's hoping he leaves the Playmaker at home.... Can't see him doing the drive by either as it was Chono's move, but, you never know!

Antonio Banks was the shit! He went move for move in his match with Homicide in FIP, which, for me, proves when fully motivated he can be a contender. His WWE past will help him a lot in NJPW, as they take a wrestlers history seriously. Plus WWE is covered in Japans weekly wrestling magazine, which has the odd name of Baseball Magazine.
As for him as a junior heavyweight, if he could trim down a bit I could see it, but I'm sure he'll mix it up with both weights. Especially with the amount of six man tag team matches that happen in New Japan, they happen there all the time!

Indeed he was Mr Cranium! He also trained in the NJPW dojo, like Benoit did. Devitts been wrestling for New Japan coming on five years, and he's finally getting the rewards that his talents deserve. I've said it before but I'll say it again. His real name is Fergal Devitt, but the Japanese can't pronounce Fergal so they rechristened him Prince Devitt!

Former WWE star MVP made his NJPW debut yesterday when he teamed with Taichi Ishikari. The pair was victorious after they beat Togi Makabe and Tomoaki in 11 minutes. MVP was originally set to team with Nosawa Rongai, but he was arrested after allegedly stealing a taxi cab.

Lol@Nosawa!

Necro if you know where to watch this, then spread the Puro love and share, share, SHARE!!

Also, don't forget guys, Giant Bernard has his big GHC Heavyweight title match coming up on the fifth of this month. Go Bernard!!!
Seriously though, this match may have been heavily promoted and GB may be enjoying his biggest push to date, but can anyone really see him being the one to end Takeshi Sugiura's EPIC title reign?
Stranger things have happened in Japan though, such as Takeshi Rikio ending Kobashi's near two year reign, Scott Norton as the IWGP Heavyweight Champion, and the ultimate dud that is Tadao Yasuda ending Yuji Nagata's record breaking IWGP Heavyweight title reign. So, ya never know!

Some other "recent" bits of news I've come across.

Prince Devitt and Ryusuke Taguchi defeated Kenny Omega and Kota Ibushi for the IWGP JR Heavyweight tag titles on January 23rd, and Ryusuke beat Mascara Dorada for the CMLL Welterweight title on January 22nd. That's right, between the pair of them Apollo 55 are now in possession of four titles! Best tag team in the world?

Lastly, on March the sixth, Zero1 will be holding their 10th anniversary show.
The top matches are
Masato Tanaka Vs Yuji Nagata
Yoshihiro Takayama Vs Shinjiro Ohtani
And Masahiro Chono will be returning (that ones for you Bods) to the ring to face Daichi Hashimoto, who just happens to be the son of, the late, Shinya Hashimoto. Hash was one of the greatest ever in Japan, so Daichi has a lot to live up to.

From their Facebook:

"NEW JAPAN CUP 2nd Round Mtaches on 19th ; Nagata vs. Tanaka, Makabe vs. MVP, Nakanishi vs. Nakamura, Tenzan vs. Yano."

This is a good card!

I dunno about sucked, but he definitely made sure everyone knew who the real star was. Himself!

Lyger used to book the Jr Heavyweight division in NJPW sometime during the 1990's. His crowning achievement was the first, and best, Super J Cup!

Super J Cup!
Speaking of Super J Cup, I don't really see why The Great Sasuke vs. Wild Pegasus got five stars from the wrestling observer... I thought it was four star at best. Maybe I've become immune to their awesome spots or something.

WAR's 95 cup was better IMO

Nah, Lyger Vs Sasuke was better than anything on the WAR card! Plus, Super J Cup 94 was the second Japanese wrestling tape I ever saw (after IWA King of the death match 95), so I may be biased. I agree with you about the Sasuke and Pegasus match though. It wasn't a patch on the awesome semi between the two masked legends!

Fuck the Observer!

This. The only reason I brought up the Observer is because I have a "5 Star Matches of Japan" compilation on my computer.

There are only three from New Japan on there by the way, and Liger vs. Sasuke is another one of them.

Oodles of All Japan matches though. Some awesome, some boring... and many of them are practically the exact same match. (since most contain either Kobashi, Misawa, Kawada or some combination thereof)

edit: Apparently AJPW still exists. Huh.

AJPW used to have "five star matches" once a week, and although I've rarely seen a bad match with any of the big names of the 90's, your kinda right, their matches all followed the same basic (awesome) formula. So to label all of those Misawa matches with the same five stars, kinda, waters down the rating somewhat. Top ten rating system works a lot better in my mind, but I've always prefererd ratings to be done out of 100 (much like many computer magazines do) as it allows much more room to distinguish the "five star matches". Also, how the fuck anyone could give the same rating to the two SJC94 matches is beyond me. The crowd may have been going nuts for Sasuke in the final, but the fatigue factor and the time limits made sure the match didn't come close to the Semi.

As for your edit, I know your joking, but for those that are reading this, AJPW is a barely there shadow of it's former self, and Baba must be rolling in his grave at what his baby has become at the hands of Muto. It's Jr Heavyweight division is something special though, and Kaz Hayashi has been having awesome matches there for a few years now.

That's awesome!!

Main eventers in Japan stay on top for years, don't they? Which is both good and bad, as the promoters over there tend to rely on their top guys a little too much. When those top stars start to wane, creating new top stars is that much harder. Something that NJPW, NOAH and AJPW have struggled with over the years.

Still as I said, it's awesome that Yuji will be facing Tanahashi! I'm hoping for a Yuji win!!!!

Well said SG. Consider my interest piqued once again!

Just went snooping and this caught my eye.

24th, 2011 New Japan has announced most of the schedule for “BEST OF THE SUPER JR. XVIII“, the latest edition of professional wrestling’s biggest tournament for junior heavyweights. Eight out of ten shows have been announced and the first thing you will notice is the overabundance of Tokyo events, with the reason being many of the places the company planned to run can’t be used because of the recent earthquake and tsunami in Japan. Ten shows will make up the tour altogether.

The annual big Osaka show in June also returns with “DOMINION 6.18″, which will be a live PPV as well as a national TV taping. As always, this will feature big title matches, just as last year’s featured Makabe defending the IWGP Heavyweight Title against Go Shiozaki, Prince Devitt dethroning Marufuji for the IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Title, and Bad Intentions taking the IWGP Tag Team Title from Nagata & Inoue. Both Devitt and Bad Intentions still hold those belts and if they make it to “DOMINION 6.18″ with them, will have reigned for about a year.

BEST OF THE SUPER JR. XVIII
- 5/26 @ Tokyo Korakuen Hall SAMURAI!
- 5/29 @ Tokyo Korakuen Hall SAMURAI!
- 6/2 @ Toyohashi City Gymnasium #2
- 6/4 @ Kyoto KBS Hall
- 6/5 @ Akashi Municipal Industrial Exchange Center
- 6/7 @ Tokyo Differ Ariake
- 6/8 @ Tokyo Differ Ariake
- 6/10 @ Tokyo Korakuen Hall SAMURAI!

- 6/18 “DOMINION 6.18″ @ Osaka Prefectural Gymnasium WPW/PPV

I have no idea why Murdock (not 'h' for some reason) got the title shot, but my guess is the history partnership between Noah and WLW,3 more successful GHC title defense from Suguira and he'll draw with Kobashi and I don't want that to happen,it seems Noah run out of opponent for Suguira too.

I never realised Sugira was so close to passing Kenta's epic amount of title defences. He has been champ since December 2009 though, so I knew he must have been close. Likely successors? ( hopefully soon)

Sugi won the GHC title from Go and beat Go on his 5th defense, also already defeated Morishima on his 7th defense.KENTA still a jr heavyweight but I dont mind a singles match between Sugi and KENTA,stiffness galore.

I think the only serious contender for Sugi's title right now are Marufuji and Sasaki,it would be interesting to see Nagata come to Noah and challenge Sugi for the title.

@Jethro, yeah, that match between Muto and Kaz was great, and if I remember correctly, Muto lost, like, forty five pounds for that match... Now thats dedication.

@SG, Daveys partner is Rocky Romero. Formerly one half of The Havana Pitbulls, with Ricky Reyes, he has held tag gold (with Ricky) in RoH. He also competed for NJPW as Black Tiger (IV or V, not too sure), which is a very high honour indeed..... Kash is a big fan of Rocky, and his pairing with Davey is a match made in puro heavan!

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say Toru Yano.

MVP and Dan Maff would probably also be good bets also (international money draw and JAPW old guard, respectively) but I think they're gonna put the belt on a Japanese native. They have enough gaijin title holders right now.

I absolutely love that these Indy guys wrestle for the biggest companies in Japan. It must really help their pocket too!!

I guess it boils down to the fact that the best Indy stars are generally smaller than most WWE superstars, but in Japan, the Indy/Jr Heavyweight style still thrives, and gaijins are always essential to PuroResu.

Did you know? Ted DiBiase Jr, and his brother, Mike, were regulars for NOAH.

I also recently got the latest issue of Power Slam (the best wrestling magazine in the western world... Topped only by Japan's weekly wrestling magazine named Baseball) and they reviewed the NJPW/JAPW shows. NJPW have been up to their old tricks of fibbing about attendance. The shows drew 600 in Jersey, 1200 in New York, and 700 in Philly, but NJPW claimed there were 1800, 2500 and 1500 respectively. Lol... PS also said that Ki-Devitt was fantastic!!! If TARU, Doring and Dupree are involved they could be looking at some serious time....

From what I can gather on this situation (been following Voodoo Murders for a while) is that TARU told the gaijin (Doering and Dupree) to get lost and he attacked Hirai repeatedly while the other Japanese members watched on. It wasn't until after Hirai wrestled KENSO (Kenzo Suzuki) that the injuries came to light. This then resulted in the outcomes Necro posted.

Big, big news from AJPW. Hopefully Hirai gets through this without too many effects from the beating.

In other news, NJPW's BOSJ is looking pretty awesome.
(~) Semifinal #1: Prince Devitt vs. Ryusuke Taguchi
(~) Semifinal #2: Kota Ibushi vs. Davey Richards
(~) Winner of Semifinal #1 vs. Winner of Semifinal #2

Yeah I was reading the situation at AJPW, that is some crazy stuff!

DAMN!!! THOSE ARE MATCHES!!!!!
