Now the Euros are done and dusted, it's time to move onto the next big footballing tourney!

The bizarre thing with this one, is the fact us English, the Welsh, the Scotts and Northern Irish will all be pulling in the same direction  (I think:confused:)

So post all Olympic footy related gubbins here!

So I want to get tickets for the Team GB warm up game against Brazil but a little googling tells me they went on sale like two weeks ago. Hopefully they haven't sold out! The game is on 20th July, so there's still plenty of time.

So glad this gimp isn't in charge! If he was still England manager, Beckham would probably have been in the Euro squad!!

Senegal first, I think we should win this. Get the men off to a good start :)

Well, considering we have UAE as 1 of the matches and I know how bad their senior team is. I'm going to assume their under 23 team shouldn't fair any better.

Uruguay will be the hardest match easily. 1 of the hard 5 in this tournament. Mexico should own their group so hopefully we can have Uruguay vs Mexico and us having someone easier like South Korea or Gabon.

We'll get round to Brazil or Spain when the time comes lol

As for the women.

Pretty much same.

Should beat Cameroon and New Zealand and hopefully stop Brazil whilst avoiding USA and France for as long as possible

Is this when they all used to compete naked, and then when the medals were handed out they'd all go off and bum each other? Without Penny Brooke's idea, research and will, there would be no organised multiple sporting event which we like to call the Olympics. de Coubertain lead the idea for an official Olympic event with a committee etc and it's because of Coubertain, Olympics is what it is.

And i quote:
Some historians describe Coubertin as the instigator of the modern Olympic movement, a man whose vision and political skill led to the revival of the Olympic Games which had been practiced in antiquity.[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pierre_de_Coubertin#cite_note-H5-0) The ancient Olympic Games were held every four years in the Greek city of Olympia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Olympia,_Greece), in the Kingdom of Elis (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elis), from 776 BCE through either 261 or 393 AD. While there were a number of other ancient games celebrated in Greece during this time period, including the Pythian (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pythian_Games), Nemean (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nemean_Games), and Isthmian Games (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isthmian_Games), Coubertin idealized the Olympic Games as the ultimate ancient athletic competition.[12] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pierre_de_Coubertin#cite_note-H6-11)

Thomas Arnold, the Head Master of Rugby School, was an important influence on Coubertin's thoughts about education, but his meetings with Dr. William Penny Brookes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Penny_Brookes) also influenced his thinking about athletic competition to some extent. A trained physician, Brookes believed that the best way to prevent illness was through physical exercise. In 1850, he had initiated a local athletic competition that he referred to as "Meetings of the Olympian Class (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wenlock_Olympian_Society_Annual_Games)"[14] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pierre_de_Coubertin#cite_note-13) at the Gaskell recreation ground at Much Wenlock (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Much_Wenlock), Shropshire.[15] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pierre_de_Coubertin#cite_note-H10-14) Along with theLiverpool Athletic Club (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Liverpool_Athletic_Club&action=edit&redlink=1), who began holding their own Olympic Festival in the 1860s, Brookes created a National Olympian Association which aimed to encourage such local competition in cities across Britain. These efforts were largely ignored by the British sporting establishment. Brookes also maintained communication with the government and sporting advocates in Greece, seeking a revivial of the Olympic Games internationally under the auspices of the Greek government.[16] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pierre_de_Coubertin#cite_note-H1213-15) There, the philanthropist brothers Evangelos (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evangelos_Zappas) andKonstantinos Zappas (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Konstantinos_Zappas) had used their wealth to fund Olympics within Greece, and paid for the restoration of the Panathinaiko Stadium (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panathinaiko_Stadium) that was later used during the 1896 Summer Olympics (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1896_Summer_Olympics).[17] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pierre_de_Coubertin#cite_note-H18-16) The efforts of Brookes to encourage the internationalization of these games came to naught.[16] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pierre_de_Coubertin#cite_note-H1213-15) However, Dr Brookes did organize a national Olympic Games in London, at Crystal Palace, in 1866 and this was the first Olympics to resemble an Olympic Games to be held outside of Greece.[18] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pierre_de_Coubertin#cite_note-Young_1996.2C_p._36-17) But while others had created Olympic contests within their countries, and broached the idea of international competition, it was Coubertin whose work would lead to the establishment of the International Olympic Committee (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Olympic_Committee) and the organization of the first modern Olympic Games.[17] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pierre_de_Coubertin#cite_note-H18-16)

There is such as thing as generally recognised incorrect history. When things are based on people's perceptions and reports only, you can get false history.

19th - Football! Whitecaps vs LA Galaxy! Although whipping boys to these dickheads, we're stupidly good at home so we should be okay!

20th and 21st - Football! /sp/ vs /m/, if we win /sp/ vs /d/, if we win we face the winners of the next bracet and then hopefully we avoid /k/ in the finals!

21st - 22nd - Super Rugby! Get to see who my Stormers will face in the semis!

26th and onwards - Football! Team GBs first fixture excluding friendlies! Senegal will really miss Ba and Cisse thansk to Pardew stopping them going so we should win! :D

27th-28th - Super Rugby! Semis and who we may face.

The very big matches coming up for me and my teams! @_@

Nice! Not bad at all :D The Uruguay game is definitely the pick of the group games. And I imagine that the Bronze game would feature some good teams.

He did basically contradict himself when talking about Beckham though. I think Butland's quality man. He's still young, and has some improving to do, but he looks like a great prospect for the future.

Agree about the referee there though. He dished out a few yellows in the first half, but then he seemed to stop punishing the hard tackles that were going in!

I think we just have to accept that the atmosphere just won't be what football games in the league are like. It would be nice to hear some more chanting and stuff, but it's just not going to be like that I don't think, since it's a much more 'family friendly' environment, with a lot of people who aren't even football fans there I'm sure.

Is Wade Barrett throwing a bitch fit because players didn't sing the anthem? Lol

For Football, England's anthem is God save the queen and Wales's is Land of our fathers. So for someone like Giggsy, it would've felt like singing for England.

And that's one of the 100 reasons why they didn't sing along: Singing is optional, not singing does in no way mean you don't love your nation, being in the zone, you don't want god to save the Queen lol, it's a football game not karaoke...etc;)

I weep for the future of this country, I really do. The lack of understanding and the trivialisation of issues like this is mind boggling but unsurprising with the brain washing that goes on in schools and most media outlets today.

This country will be gone in a generation, two at most as we'll have nothing of our own. It will all be handed over, through lack of understanding.

Well I'm sorry that you don't understand why Welshmen, Scotsmen and Irishmen refuse to sing God save the Queen. You clearly aren't well versed in the history behind it at all.

I find it a bit offensive that you're accusing our schools of 'brainwashing' us. I mean really? You make it sound like we're some terrorist organization or something lol!

When you refer to "this country" I suppose you mean Britain? I hope it will be gone. Wales wants to be independent as we were before the English invaded and suppressed us (why do you think every foreign country thinks Wales is a part of England?). Scotland are well on their way to being independent, and the sooner it happens to us too, the better.

The level of understanding is hilarious. I want Scotland and Wales to be independant, truly independant but that wasn't the crux of my argument. Again education is taking a real kicking here today.

EISA! Goal! What a goal! Owned Tomkins, owned Butland. 1-1! :(

Class goal though. Keeper and defence shouldn't done better.

Enjoyed the game pal?

Also, Team GB male and females have made the quarters! Happy days! :)

Men should lose to Brazil and hopefully get Mexico in the Bronze so I can lick Paus tears of sadness ;D

The ladies however have a good shout at Gold really. Beat Brazil and still have a great coach and team capable of Gold. A medal at least methinks :)

Excellent day at the Mill Stad yesterday to watch the footy! Both games were pretty decent to be fair, and I got to see some quality football!

Expected to see Mexico go through, and although the Swiss were the ones that had the better of it in the first half, they were overrun by the end and Mexico got the single goal to send them through and the Swiss out.

Some standout players: Mexico's number 11 (I forget his name) is a very decent little winger. Their holding midfielder, number 14 I think (the bald guy, and not Salcido (who was also playing in midfield rather than his usual position in defense)) had a decent game. Benaglio is a quality keeper, but I think we all knew that since he's the Swiss no.1 anyway. And Dos Santos is also a great player. He didn't have the best game yesterday, but he's seriously good, and I do not understand why Spurs haven't given him a chance in their team. I hope AVB will change that. Kasami I thought had a good game for the Swiss too. He's a good little player, and I hope he gets more of a chance at Fulham in the coming season.

In the second game, I got to see everything! Quality football from Uruguay and GB, but I really fancy GB's chances to get to the semis. They've come such a long way since that warm up game against Brazil, it's hard to believe that it's the same team! Bellamy was awesome, Butland had another blinder making 2 top quality saves, Ramsey was good in patches, Taylor had an excellent game at full back. An all round good team performance.
I have to say though, Luis Suarez was absolutely atrocious. Not just in the way he played, but in his conduct too. He does absolutely nothing to help his cause against the boo-boys.
Another one who had an absolute shocker was the linesman. He missed 2 very obvious offsides (one was at least 2 yards offside, I know this since I was sitting pretty much in line with it), a couple of fouls right in front of his nose, and he gave a goal kick only to be (rightly) overruled by the referee who gave a corner. Absolutely shocking.

All in all though, had an absolute blast. Shame that it was £4.50 for a beer in the stadium, since I couldn't enjoy a few cold ones with the match, although I did fork out £12 for 3 pies for my Dad, brother and I (a nice pork pie, but come on, £4?!). The atmosphere was incredible, both in and out of the stadium. Took me back to the days when Wales used to host their football internationals in the Mill-Stad. I really miss those days, and it's a shame we can't yet go back to having our internationals there. But yesterday was absolutely awesome, and I can't wait now for the Bronze Medal a week tomorrow!

Great game yeah, 4 goals (one disallowed) 2 yellow cards and a red card to.

Good atmosphere, although Brazil were the favourites with the crowd, New Zealand were cheered to, the fans were very respectful to everyone.

Was a good game dude.some excellent goals.Honduras gave them a game, only naive defending and tackling let them down.Gotta give them credit though.

Certainly felt like fucking England!

You can't be too hard on them though, I mean it was an experiment really. Shame they never got in the medals but whatever.
