Your sex and your dope is all that we're fed

Airbourne - Aussie band! Mind you, they'll go the way of Anvil I feel.

Rock is not dead, just hibernating. It's waiting out the god awful rock off shoots as evidenced by bands such as Kings Of Leon or Nickelback and wussy emo rock to wane. There's still good rock bands out there but the market is so saturated by so many millions of artists of all genres, it's hard to see them.

I mean, Linken Park won Best Rock at the MTV EMA's for fuck sake. What does that tell you?

To be fair, MTV has always been a gauge of what's popular, not necessarily what's good.

There's loads of great rock bands out there nowadays; you just have to know where to look for it (and the radio ain't it).

Man I had been typing a response for like, the past ten minutes, and I accidentally navigated off the page by pressing backspace somehow.

Short version: The current climate of the metal underground and the semi-mainstream stoner rock/doom metal scene suggests a popular resurgance of rock 'n roll and traditional heavy metal within at least the next five years. But we should probably stop living in the past.

Pop used to mean popular but now it has changed its definition. One style stayed popular for so long it now defines the genre.

I kinda still use "pop" to mean "popular".

Like, I would call AC/DC and Iron Maiden pop metal, but I don't really mean anything negative by it.

Exactly. It was used for all that bubblegum, girlband, boyband, etc, stuff, and that is now what everyone associates with "pop", that it is negative.

Another band that, at one point, was given the "rock" label... Actually dated a girl in high school that looked like Susan Wallace (the brunette in the video)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NNQ58zV-WkI

I think it is really interesting just how many different styles can conceivably fall under the "rock" label, so no. I do not think it is dead, because there will always be some genre that is defined as "rock", and, perhaps more to the point, there will always be music for people that need a heavier beat, and a bit of the angrier style in their music. So there will always be an audience for it.

I think musical tastes as far as what is popular for whatever generation is pretty much a cylindrical pattern anyway, like fashion. Right now we are on the end where there are happier lyrics, and more electronically inspired musical stylings, much as there was in the 80s, it is different now than it was then, sure.. but overall I think it remains about the same.

I'd call AC/DC just hard rock and Maiden heavy metal. Then you have your Classic Rock, plain old Rock, Nu Metal, Thrash, Hardcore, Grindcore, Adult Oriented Rock, Black Metal, Pop Rock(s;)), Glam Rock, Punk Rock, Alternative Rock, Progressive Rock, I could go on - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_rock_genres

Like I said, there's just so many styles and genres now, the market is flooded. Damn I miss the old days!

I like Sabbath, but it's not enough to tempt me to go to Download yet.

Last 2 years, Rage played and convinced me, and System played and that convinced me. ATM, Sabbath and Metallica is not enough personally.

But I do enjoy Sabbath, Children of the Grave is one hell of a riff.

See, the reason I class AC/DC and Iron Maiden as pop metal is more out of practicality than throwing them under an actual category. As in, I would probably play AC/DC and Maiden in front of other people. I wouldn't really play more obscure hard rock or heavy metal bands in front of people like Ciirith Ungol, Colour Haze, Slauter Xstroyes, Pagan Altar, Flower Travelling Band, or The Lord Weird Slough Feg (actually I probably would play Slough Feg, just cuz they ddeessttrrooyy)

Also, Iron Maiden was more NWOBHM than straight up heavy metal. At least during their 80's peak. So many good bands came out that movement, like Diamondhead and Venom.

----

Anyway I was under the impression we were just talking about normal rock n' roll music. THAT'S pretty much dead. If you count it's millions of subgenres, it's far from dead. Even if most of them are incredibly boring and derivative.

The stoner/doom scene has been fucking incredible in the past decade though.

Stoner Rock rules.

Sabbath....I don't know. They're legends and all but I don't see much need for it. They say there's a new album in the works too. I thought Bill Ward was dead! oops, sorry Bill.
